The joy of the sketchbook. Sketchbook goobers. Little goofy brainfarts.
Inktober! Blessed inktober, it comes once a year every year, and every year I'm taken by surprise. Every year I think "this is the year I'm totally gonna do it" and every year I kinda sorta something maybe. (This year I'm totally gonna do it though.)
These drawings are recent, just last year, but are also quite ancient. It's the kind of sketchbook goobers I have been drawing my entire life. It's default processing mode. The margins in the notebooks in high school were reserved for chemistry, math, grammar, and the pages were for the goobers. And anyway it's easier to listen to the teacher when drawing little goobers.
The other more colorful sketches are from the HEAVYPAINT Sketchbook.
HEAVYPAINT is a blessing, an aberration, made by artists for artists, slightly janky in the best kinda way. It feels like a gouache set. The brushes are heavy, like the name implies, and it has my favourite tool in all of digital painting: the lasso fan brush. You simply make the outline of the shape and it fills it in.
This is a genuinely novel way to paint with a digital stylus, no longer imitating a bristled brush, no longer constructing shapes from brush strokes. You simply lay down the shape you want. Become a sculptor of paint, carve shapes and colors into each other to make the image. It is difficult to convey in words how quick and powerful this is.
