Panic, noise, look at their face, it's not good. This must be anxiety, a painting of anxiety.
Loud and burning, it's all made of it, the entire world. World of burning loudness, and you are inside it. I'm sure you know the feeling.
The image strikes with colour, it’s the first thing you see. The harmonies are rich but basic, dominated by C major triad of red-orange-yellows, supported by weird sus4 grey teals and pine greens. Given air by a little A minor blue.
None of it is jazz, but everything is rhythm and motion and full of scribbly energy. The surface of the image does not rest and nor can you.
Portrait of eyes, they pull you in, hard. But so does everything else: the bare teeth held to a grind, the pencil-thin blue line (shimmer of sweat?), the action of every frantic brush stroke. Giant swathes of red, bright burning red. Once you find the eyes there’s more weirdness to them: one eye is drawn under the fold, the other on top..
But how!? How can this be, look at it, it's a mess of scribbles in yellow and green and red and blue and purple and orange and teal and peach, does it ever run out? How can I understand what's going on, splash of this, scribble there, how can I see a face?
Can you just do anything? Is this even legal??
Underneath the tint of color is value. The light and the dark, brightness of color. How loud the signal is. If this is correct and structured well, the rest can be whatever.
Strip everything away and the most basic signal is this: it’s a face. (Pay attention! It’s a face!). Only then comes everything else, the wash of color, the excitement, the psychological read.
And because the psych read comes last, with all the noise in the way, the quick read is disrupted. You are forced to linger, and see, and find that under the cheerful color something more sinister sits.
