Something somber. Sometimes it’s like this.
Soldierboy, child soldier, or at the very least a young man. Long gone are peacock plumes and jolly red trousers, this one enjoys mechanized warfare. Boys being boys, with guns.
Let's look at the image. The textural grunginess of the brushwork, evocative of peeling paint. Manor walls of manor halls, commissioned by a unit stationed. The great ballroom of the officers' waltz now hosts machine guns on wheels.
There is a shit seen look in the eyes, and the subtlest touch of red as a reward to you for looking. It says of some horror or dead passion. The eye is subtle but not untouched, you were meant to notice it.
Hair is marked with a scribble, look at how whatever it’s made, it’s so sweet. And on the shoulder a single wick of a stroke defines the epaulette. Papa Sargent would be proud.
On the cheek there is a stroke with the rake brush. There is something mechanical in it. It’s railroad logs and chimney stacks and bullets aligned in a magazine. Industrial era warfare leaving its mark on the boy.
Gloomy painting, soulful stuff.
